About Homework
Weekly Homework
Every Friday, students will receive their weekly homework, which will be due on the following Friday. The homework this year will be vocabulary organized by Greek & Latin word roots. The packet is split into 6 sections, with only the last 2 being graded. On Friday when the homework is due, we'll go over the answers together at the start of class, then students will have a 10 question test on the terms. At the end of class, students will get the next week of homework, where we'll go through the list together, I'll answer any questions they have, and they'll get 10-15 minutes to start the homework. I also post .PDFs of that week's homework and flashcards in the Google Classroom, as well as slides I make on the terms for kids to use to study.
Reading
Students should read every night for at least 20 minutes. That being said, I know real life doesn't always work that way, and finding the time can sometimes be a challenge. I do not enforce the use reading logs or trackers as homework. Instead, I offer incentives (prizes) for the kids who read and track their reading in their agenda book. If your child reads at home, have them write the book and the amount of time they read on that day in their agenda book and initial it. Next time I check, I'll reward them for reading.
Lexia
Our district uses Lexia to help students practice and reinforce their reading and language skills. If your child has a compatible device (most laptops/tablets and some phones), they can log into Lexia via Clever and work toward their weekly goal. By default, most students are expected to complete 16 units (lessons) every week. They will have some time in class, but doing Lexia at home can be a big help.
